This weekend is going to be a big one, Philly.
FAN EXPO Philadelphia takes over the Pennsylvania Convention Center from Friday through Sunday, May 29-31, and the panel lineup they just unveiled is honestly stacked. We’re talking 150+ panels, screenings, and meetups packed into three days, plus after-hours events that run well into the night. If you love this stuff (and if you’re reading this, you do), there’s something here for you.
Let’s start with the headliners, because wow. Orlando Bloom is hosting an epic special Lord of the Rings panel with the cast, and the “Four Hobbits” themselves, Elijah Wood, Sean Astin, Dominic Monaghan, and Billy Boyd, will be on hand. Doctor Who fans get David Tennant and Arthur Darvill. Star Trek brings Jonathan Frakes and Brent Spiner. And Smallville leads Tom Welling, Michael Rosenbaum, and Erica Durance, who round out a celebrity lineup that’s tough to beat. That’s just scratching the surface, too.
Here’s the part I really want you to circle on your calendar: the after-hours events. Friday at 8:30 p.m. is An Evening With The Hobbits: In Celebration of 25 Years, featuring Wood, Astin, Monaghan, and Boyd. Twenty-five years. Let that sink in. Saturday brings Smallville Nights with Welling and Rosenbaum at 7:30 p.m., followed by Comics Xplosion at 8 p.m.
The con runs multiple programming rooms all weekend, from show opening at 4 p.m. Friday through the 5 p.m. close on Sunday. You’ll find cosplay, gaming, trivia, film, horror, podcasts, and screenings, and a lot of these sessions are run by Philadelphia-based organizations. Love to see the local talent getting the spotlight.
Speaking of which, I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention my own panel. Sunday at 12:15 p.m. in Room 123 (Workshops), I’m hosting Somebody Save Me: How Smallville Launched 25 Years of DC Heroes on TV. Before the Arrowverse, before the DCU streaming shows, there was Smallville. For 10 seasons, we watched Clark Kent grow from a farm kid into Superman, and the show quietly laid the blueprint for the entire wave of DC television that followed. We’ll celebrate 25 years of Smallville, dig into its influence on shows like Arrow, The Flash, and Superman & Lois, and talk about why this teen drama about a young hero in Kansas became one of the most important superhero shows ever made. If you’re a fan of the show (or DC TV in general), come hang out.
A few things running all weekend worth knowing about: Wrestler Meet and Greets in Room 119AB, Anime Music Videos in Room 120C, and Tabletop Gaming tournaments in Room 121C. The Makerspace (Room 122B) is also worth a stop, with live model drawings, hands-on tutorials, 3D modeling, and demonstrations throughout the weekend.
New this year, the Greater Philadelphia Film Office is screening Riverbend on Friday at 7:30 p.m. (Room 121AB), and the Greater Philadelphia Gamer Symphony Orchestra performs Saturday at 6:15 p.m. (also Room 121AB). If you’ve never heard video game music performed live, do yourself a favor.
And Sailor Moon fans, Sunday is yours. There’s a full Sailor Moon extravaganza celebrating the iconic manga series, complete with a Glam Station, cosplay meetups, teamups, and Q&As with Erika Harlacher, Katie Griffin, Linda Ballantyne, and Stephanie Sheh.
One important note: dates, times, and content are all subject to change, so check the official schedule at fanexpohq.com/fanexpophiladelphia/our-schedule/ or grab the FAN EXPO Philadelphia app to stay on top of real-time updates. A bunch of the celebrity panels are free with admission, too, which is a great deal.
Adult, Youth, and Child Single-Day Tickets, Three-Day Passes, and Family Passes are available now at fanexpophiladelphia.com.
See you there. Go Birds, and may the Force be with you (wrong franchise, I know, but you get it).

First and foremost, Kev is a dad to three wonderful children. He’s also an uber Kevin Smith fan (all Smith’s movies are worth a watch, even Yoga Hosers) who has cried during Kermit’s monologue in The Muppets and once owned two VHS copies of Spice World. He loves all pop culture, particularly the MCU and Star Wars. The Evil Dead franchise is his favorite horror franchise, though the original Scream is his favorite scary movie. He bleeds Eagle’s green in the (suburbs of the) greatest city on Earth, Philadelphia. Go Birds!
