Fans of the Evil Dead franchise have a reason to celebrate: Bruce Campbell teased his return as the iconic Ash Williams in a new animated series. According to Deadline and Campbell, this animated version with the actor is possible because his voice hasn’t aged as much as his body has.
Animated Ash: A New Chapter of the Beloved Character with Bruce Campbell
While the new series is only in development, Bruce Campbell will reprise his role, lending his voice to the animated series. This exciting development is a perfect blend of nostalgia and innovation, ensuring that both longtime fans and new viewers will have something to look forward to. Going to animation feels like a pretty logical step as the way Campbell has portrayed Ash in the past is, at the very least, cartoon-inspired!
The Legacy of ‘Evil Dead’
The Evil Dead franchise, which began in 1981, has become a cornerstone of horror-comedy, influencing numerous films and TV shows. Campbell’s portrayal of Ash Williams has been central to its enduring popularity, and his return in animated form is a testament to the character’s lasting appeal.
This announcement follows the success of Ash vs Evil Dead, the live-action series that concluded in 2018. We’ve been treated to more the the Evil Dead world with 2023’s Evil Dead Rising, but fans are always eager for more Ash Williams––the animated series offers a fresh and exciting way to continue Ash’s story.
The actor does believe the series relies on the strength of the premise more than anything else:
We’re out of the cabin, Sam [Raimi] doesn’t have to direct, I don’t have to star as Ash. The trick is to take the elements that people like, which is innocent people being tortured by a malicious entity, and it’s people who have no skills to stop it.
What to Expect
While the series is still in the early stages of development, it’s not unreasonable to expect it to deliver the same blend of over-the-top horror and slapstick comedy that fans love. Campbell’s involvement ensures that Ash’s return will be faithful to the character’s roots, complete with witty one-liners and epic battles against the forces of evil.
