In my older age, I consider myself a console gamer—and even then, that term is very loose (finding time to game as an adult is hard!). And while that was my main source of gaming in my younger days, I am part of the Warcraft and Starcraft generation. Sure, World of Warcraft is good and all, but those real-time-strategy games from my youth? *chef’s kiss*
This leads to today’s promo—Beneath the Mountain!
Beneath the Mountain is a dwarven city-builder and real-time-strategy game. Mine your way into the mountain, discover gold and silver, construct buildings, recruit an army, build traps, and defeat the vile creatures that lurk in the dark caves of the mountain. Most importantly, find the heart of the mountain before the orcs destroy your kingdom.
While Beneath the Mountain is still under development, I’ve got to say, it looks quite remarkable. First and foremost, the cover art of the game sold me right away. Now, if you’re the “don’t judge a book by its cover” type, then the short trailer above shows just enough about the game so that we all know what this is—a dwarven city-builder and real-time-strategy game. Now, I have yet to get the chance to play myself, but I’ve been watching some of the VOD content on the developer’s, Max Arnheiter, Twitch channel and it’s even more impressive than what the trailer dives into.
What is Beneath the Mountain
In the best description I can offer, Beneath the Mountain is part War/Starcraft and part Sim City. On a randomly generated map, you build your dwarven empire. There are 10 types of dwarves to populate and help build your kingdom, collect silver/gold, and fight off 13 types of cave creatures and 9 types of goblins and orcs. You can build your kingdom with 26 different building types across 5 floors and help defend it with 7 types of traps. As you expand your kingdom, you can build a mining cart transportation system for ease. There is also a Runeforge Talent system to build up skills and make it easier to defend your kingdom and find the heart of the mountain before defeat.
You can check out the itch.io page for Beneath the Mountain for more information about the game, watch the developer streams on Thursdays and Fridays, and join Discord to dig deeper into the Beneath the Mountain community. Stay tuned for our follow-up interview with Max to learn even more about this very exciting game!

First and foremost, Kev is a dad to three wonderful children. He’s also an uber Kevin Smith fan (all Smith’s movies are worth a watch, even Yoga Hosers) who has cried during Kermit’s monologue in The Muppets and once owned two VHS copies of Spice World. He loves all pop culture, particularly the MCU and Star Wars. The Evil Dead franchise is his favorite horror franchise, though the original Scream is his favorite scary movie. He bleeds Eagle’s green in the (suburbs of the) greatest city on Earth, Philadelphia. Go Birds!
