Greetings, travelers, and welcome to another stop through the Otherworld. If you’re the kind of person who likes to get lost in various escapes, well, you’re not too different than the hero of the story we’ll be visiting today. If you’ve often dreamed about creating your own world, this one will speak to you especially. Read on to learn more about The Alpha Protocol, the first book in the Symphony series.
Author J. D. Mullenary Sr. knows just what it looks like to want to create a world, and he explores that in a multilayered sci-fi story with his debut, The Alpha Protocol: A Sci-Fi LitRPG Adventure (Symphony Book 1). Mullenary brings a fresh voice to Sci-Fi and LitRPG, blending intricate worldbuilding and a compelling character-driven story. While LitRPGs can often have a problem where characters feel stilted and artificial, that’s not really the case here, as the author brings them to life in captivating ways. Readers will no doubt be compelled to follow the moral struggles that are presented. The story is rich and full as well, feeling more like it has been present all the while, rather than being built piecemeal.
Fresh off a break-up and now unemployed, veteran and former high school English teacher Walker Reed is ready to succumb to a grim and hopeless depression. But when an enigmatic stranger stops him in the street, he’s suddenly hurled into another dimension.
There, Walker gets to build his own world from scratch following the Alpha Protocol, which invites special individuals from across the universe to become “Creators”—generating everything from their own land masses and celestial bodies to a comprehensive, recorded religion.
With the help of his robotic assistant, Virgil—who happens to be a four-foot-tall squirrel—Walker sets about building out his geography, evolutionary systems, and creatures. But it’s not like playing in a sandbox, and he quickly realizes his creations can have world-ending consequences. Not to mention the creators are regularly pitted against one another in the Creator Wars . . .
As if all that weren’t bad enough, if Walker can’t complete the Alpha Protocol, he’ll be sent back to his previous reality, which has only gotten darker. As he unlocks new systems and paths, can he balance his desire to be a peaceful, benevolent, and ethical god? Or will everything devolve into chaos?
The narrative’s unique blend of sci-fi, fantasy, and gaming mechanics makes this a standout adventure for fans of LitRPG and portal fantasies alike. It moves at a brisk pace, and even though it’s a weighty book, readers will no doubt fly through it as they grow more and more invested in the stakes. There’s a reason that Mullenary had so many reads on Royal Road with this book when it was being developed. Now’s your chance to discover why as well. Whether you’re a fan of immersive systems, intricate lore, or character-driven sci-fi adventures, this first volume is a must-read.
