Greetings, travelers. As we round out the week in our trips through the Otherworld, we bring you an irreverent look at some of the great classics of fantasy, most notably some of the most famous children’s tales you’ll remember. With a grungier veneer, you’ll see that not everything stays as whimsical and pristine as it once was. Learn more about that in our promo for Emerald City, P.D.: “D” is for Dorothy.
Author Steve Margolis shows his wit in the darkly satirical fantasy, Emerald City, P.D.: “D” is for Dorothy, a twist on not just Wizard of Oz, but many of the other characters you’ve grown to love who are now in the public domain. From the very first page, readers will be drawn into the teasingly entertaining banter, the way that the author weaves in all sorts of classic properties, and still leaves plenty of room to tell a story that is fun all on its own. There are twists and turns, usually all done in a cheeky way to the original source material, and it will have folks eagerly awaiting what will come next, whether it’s seeing what character may show up from the shadows, or to find out just who may be in danger.
Dorothy Gale isn’t a lost little girl anymore—she’s the most elusive thief in Oz. After years of high-stakes heists, dangerous alliances, and stolen fortunes, she’s ready to leave it all behind. One last job stands between her and freedom—a score big enough to secure her future and vanish for good. With her boyfriend, a crew of misfits, and a flawless plan, Dorothy is set to disappear into legend.
But just as freedom is within reach, the job takes a deadly turn, pulling her into a web of secrets, unseen dangers, and forces far beyond her control. The past refuses to stay buried, the stakes climb higher than ever, and suddenly, walking away isn’t so simple.
Dorothy wants out. But Oz? Oz isn’t ready to let her go.
“Imagine a crime novel, a fairy tale, and a porn movie walked into a bar… then got blackout drunk and had a threesome. That’s this!” – Munchkin Gazette
“For anyone who’s ever said, ‘Let’s throw Dorothy, Alice, and Tigger into a blender and hit frappe,’ this book is exactly the delightful mess you deserve.” – Mad Hatter Herald
Yes, Emerald City, P.D. is a satire at heart, but it’s done so well, with plenty of tongue-in-cheek-and-other-places vibes that will crack a smile wide enough that readers may need to seek medical attention. But even in those moments where a grin isn’t the main event, there’s still plenty of excitement to be had with rejiggered versions of classic characters that you might find around the next page. And since there’s a tremendous amount of public domain content at hand, Margolis has all the fodder he needs to keep playing in this world, should he want to, so there’s no better time than now to acclimate to his realms.
