Greetings, travelers! We have got a delightful entry in the Otherworld today, and it’s one that I’m sure a lot of people are going to gush over. We’re very encouraging to young, up-and-coming creators, and we’ve got a jack-of-all-trades that is making his way up now which you should really check out. If that’s caught your attention, read on to learn more about Low Stakes Contracts.
Ozzy the Artist is a storyteller of many mediums whose newest work, Low Stakes Contracts, brings his sense of magical talespinning to life in some big ways. This character-driven collection of stories is being presented in an ongoing form, and it’s something you could find on Wattpad, Royal Road, or Kindle Vella. Ozzy’s tales start with Cider by the Fire, a tavern-based short that introduces readers to the world that Low Stakes Contracts takes place in. It also does a fantastic job of introducing you to the characters that Ozzy is bringing to life. It feels simultaneously grounded and like a game of D&D come to life, and it’s sure to get fantasy fans feeling electrified as they jump from point of view to point of view.
An original story (or fan fiction) set in Keith Baker’s world of Eberron, we follow the slice of life adventures and contracts of three different adventurers and their perspectives of the world at large and the problems they face. No matter where they go, problems will arise and they will be the ones to clean it up. Or fail. That’s life.
Oswald Auditore: an alchemically mutated bounty hunter who views himself as less than human. The man is over a century old (though appears to be in his mid-20s due to slowed down aging) who has a practical and jaded view.
Samantha Haru Collot: An anthropomorphic canine bard with a cavalier attitude to the chaos around her. She always wants to see the beauty in things, which is becoming a much more difficult task. Her age is unknown, because she won’t tell.
Colt Punslayer: The in-between of Oswald’s cynicism and Samantha’s optimism. Colt is a barbarian/bard who has a very relaxed, friendly attitude towards his allies. He is a lot like fire: it keeps those close warm, it burns those who mess around with it. His age is mid 60s, already showing signs of aging despite his longer lifespan.
Low Stakes Contracts also has some fun, light worldbuilding as well. It lives in the world of Eberron, so it’s got a lot of foundational pieces already, but the author twists and tweaks it to feel more like his own playground. It’s no surprise that Ozzy the Artist puts a lot of the weight of the story on his characters’ shoulders. They carry a lot of emotional heft, their relationships paramount to the stories being told. Though their introduction is a bit more on the whimsical, playful side, you’ll soon find that the author is not afraid to add real consequences to the growing tapestry. If you’re ready to explore a great bite-sized set of stories with some real impact, and fantastic characters that you’ll love to root for, don’t wait.
