Greetings, travelers, and welcome to another week in the Otherworld. Today, we’re going to be looking at an interesting sci-fi that’s set so far into the future that humanity has become a distant thing that nobody can remember. In this new universe, anything is possible. Watch cosmic events unfold in Monolith: Echoes of Eternity.
Author Joshua Barry uses his debut title, Monolith: Echoes of Eternity, to show us that thousands of years is really just a blink of an eye, cosmically speaking. The author’s story takes place millions of years in the future, and after a brief look at the life of the lead, Xueri, another ten thousand years pass, thrusting the protagonist into a universe that he no longer recognizes. It’s an exploration of not just the universe, but the cultural difference between people, and of overcoming the things that make people fear or even hate one another. While all of this transpires, Barry tells a compelling tale of action, of new friendships, and of rediscovery.
Over thirty million years have passed since the fall of the mostly forgotten Human Empire.
What has replaced it is a universe of conflicting empires and other factions, all vying for dominance and power.
In the midst of this cosmopolitical landscape, Xueri, a young and seemingly insignificant prince on Planet Rualaj, an isolated snowy planet on the fringes of the universe, finds his destiny to be tied up in great cosmic events.
The Rualajese, unlike any other alien race, possess immortality, a trait that seizes the attention of the Empire of Durosia and catapults them to invade Xueri’s world.
Xueri and his people try their best to resist, but are hopeless against the mighty alien empire. He is separated from his best friend and now girlfriend, Sapphire, to be put in a ten thousand-year coma while in a lab on another planet.
After awakening, Xueri finds himself in an unfamiliar universe as he slowly recovers his memories.
Meanwhile, the new Durosian Emperor, Vielodesi, is desperate for immortality, which Durosia has still failed to extract, as he finds himself in his seventies and with no heir. Vielodesi decides he must finish what his ancestors started and capture Xueri to extract his immortality.
A struggle that will determine the fate of the universe and the supernatural realm awaits Xueri.
The question is, can he even save himself?
There is a lot to dive into within the pages of Echoes of Eternity, from intriguing relationships between characters who have such varied sorts of lives, to a fight for survival across the cosmos. Barry finds a nice pace to keep to, ensuring that things never feel as though they linger for too long on the page. He lets the environment breathe, ensuring that Xueri feels a little less like a tour guide than someone the reader can explore the galaxy with. Still, the hefty book travels fast, and before fans will know it, they’ll be turning the final page. As this is sure to be only the first book in this interesting new series, there’s never been a better time than now to dive into a new sci-fi experience.
