SDCC 2022 – Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves Trailer

The new trailer from Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves has arrived and the heroes follow a familiar campaign trope.

And I mean that in a very good way. I’d be lying if I said I’ve been excited about the new Dungeons & Dragons movie since it was announced. I’ve been extremely cautious about it—it just feels like franchise that could too easily get screwed up. However, after watching the trailer, I can see that Honor Among Thieves is in good hands!

As you can see from the trailer, the team consists of multiclassing thieves who make a huge mistake in one session and need to fix it in the next. Well, that’s the tabletop way of explaining it! The team, seemingly led by Chris Pine’s human bard, stole “the wrong thing for the wrong person” and accidentally unleashed “the greatest evil the world has ever known”. And, honestly, that’s my kind of campaign! We also see some classic creatures: a dragon, a mimic, a displacer beast, a gelatinous cube, and, of course, an owlbear (who is actually a Tiefling druid)—you know, standard Dungeons & Dragons.

Starring in the film is Chris Pine as (previously stated) a bard and Regé-Jean Page as a paladin, but not much is known about who they are, just their classes (which were revealed on the posters at Comic-Con). It’s not known whether they’re drawing from the expansive D&D lore, or if they’re entirely new characters. Also appearing at the Comic-Con were posters of Michelle Rodriguez as a barbarian, Hugh Grant as a rogue, Justice Smith as a sorcerer, and Sophia Lillis as a Tiefling Druid.

Producer Jeremy Latcham and filmmakers Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley, all three are devoted D&D players, participated in the discussion. Later, the cast joined the panel and answered queries from the audience. Critical Role appearances and characters that would resemble the cast of the 1983 Dungeons & Dragons animated television series were confirmed by the cast and crew.

The Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves campaign beings, in theaters, on March 3, 2023.
